NGSCO has made long term plans to employ UAE nationals in
key positions in NGSCO, both on board ships and
in its offices. To this end, shareholders approval
will be sought every year to recruit cadets. The
rate of recruitment will depend on the perceived
requirement, and the actual number recruited will
be at the discretion of the shareholders. The first
group of cadets has been recruited in Jan. 1995.
On commencement of employment, the cadet will attend
an English Language courses, with a special emphasis
on Technical (Marine) English. They get trained
on college campus as well as at sea, under a Cadetship
Program that fully meets the requirements of STCW,
this successful completion entitles them to certification.
The training referred to is for either Deck or Engineering
officers.
The progress made by the cadets during the training
program will be followed and monitored by NGSCO
management in Abu Dhabi.
The duration of the basic study is 3-4 years, after
which the cadet will be appointed abroad the vessels
as a Deck Officer or Marine Engineer Officer, according
to his specialization during the cadetship. While
the career progression of a Deck Officer peaks out
when he becomes a Captain, an engineer's ultimate
target is to become a Chief Engineer both requiring
more than 8-10 additional years.
Since working at sea is considered very hard in
terms of work location, Leave schedule is quite
different from normal organization, i.e., continuous
work for three months at sea, with approximately
three months of continuous leave.
